Back in the days of the Fourth National government, Prime Minister Jim Bolger copped some stick for suggesting that New Zealand was more a part of Asia than Europe. Bolger was often lampooned by cartoonists as a having a potato-head, but there was nothing spuddy about Jim's Asian Outlook.

New Zealand has a long and varied history with Asia in general and China in particular. We are the first developed nation to sign a free trade agreement with China, and that country is now our second largest trading partner.

Is Facebook's transformation into an "entertainment hub" a stroke of genius that will further grow the already massive social network, or a megalomaniac turn towards failure by bored billionaire Mark Zuckerberg?

I can't tell but to be honest, I'd rather the concept didn't come off. While I'm on Facebook just like everyone else, I rarely go there these days.

Edna Kerr was once quoted by Dale Carnegie in his best seller How to stop worrying and start living as saying "The greatest tragedy I know of is that so many young people never discover what they really want to do".

This is something that I find holds true to this day.

I often go into schools and ask students what they think that a computer scientist would do for a living. If I'm lucky a few might say "work out how to use computers", or "hack".

Andy ProwIT Security: New copyright act has a silver lining?

Some businesses are concerned that the new Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011 now means they are liable for the errant Internet usage of their employees.

This can indeed be the case, and with the Act now enforceable, companies can't afford to ignore it. However there may be some positive, albeit unintended outcomes to the legislation.
