This Week at NZCS

Paul MatthewsAssalamualaikum from Brunei

As mentioned in the previous Newsline I've spent much of the last week out of the country visiting Brunei (with a side-trip to Vietnam). I thought I'd take the opportunity to talk about some of the excellent experiences from this trip.

We visited Brunei at the invitation and as a guest of the Prime Minister's Office of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to run a two-day ICT skills workshop and associated meetings with Brunei government officials and other stakeholders. The intention was that this would be the first step in planning implementation of an ICT Skills competency framework in their country.

A while ago, I wrote about David Frampton who developed the hugely popular Chopper series of games for Mac OS X and iPhone OS, for the NZ Herald.

That's some wild career weave there for Frampton, going from being a fine artist to a coder. It's excellent stuff, and shows how mature ICT has become - it's a creative industry now.

I didn't however ask him any detailed questions about what it's like being a little cog in the giant Apple machine, beyond general stuff like how he finds it and how lucrative it is (very, by the sounds of it).

This week we look at the elements of a valid commissioning and conclude with some pragmatic advice to safeguard ownership of commissioned copyright works.

If you work for clients you really do need to be aware of the effect of the Commissioning Rule.
